Find Your True Story Book Coaching

Writing is what makes me who I am. Writing it what makes me myself. Writing is what makes me me. Whether that is writing novels, scribbling in my journal, or writing about writing, I need to write to feel at ease in the world, to feel whole.

Maybe this is you, too?

But perhaps you have hit a snag on the path to feeling whole as a writer?

I can help.

I’ve learned a variety of approaches to working with clients and I use them all, depending on the individual writer’s needs. I don’t believe in a one-size-fits-all coaching. We will work together to find the approach that works for you.  Maybe you need some gentle guidance on structure as you pants your way through a draft, or even, gasp, encouragement to try some plotting. Perhaps you need help fleshing out characters that leap from the page, or crafting settings that make people long to visit. Or maybe you just need help getting your butt in the chair and your mind to the page.

I have an MFA in fiction writing from one of the finest programs in the country, and I’m an adjunct instructor at the third-largest university in Tennessee. I co-lead in-person writing workshops in England, France, Italy and the Pacific Northwest. That’s all well and good, for sure, but what does it mean for you? It means that I have over twenty years experience working one on one with writers and also teaching at the college level. My students and clients have gotten contracts with major publishers, published books independently, started blogs and websites. Most importantly, they have learned to take themselves seriously, to claim their space as writers.

Since I have an MFA, I’ve learned lots about writing beautiful language and what it takes to complete a novel. But I’ve also studied a ton about story structure—something most MFA programs ignore. I’ve taken classes on structure from Michael Hauge, on romance from Skye Warren, read books and deeply studied the Save the Cat, and Hero’s Journey, theories, as well as the three or four act structure of drama.

In my own work, sometimes I rely on a certain way and with other books I utilize something completely different. And that’s the approach I’ll take with you as my client. There’s no one way to write that works for everyone—what you need is to find the one that works for you. We can do that together, you and I.
